ABC News' The Note is a daily summary of political articles and a running commentary on the presidential race, compiled and written by ABC News political reporters with their thumbs on the pulse of the chattering class. Today's edition contains their best effort at defining "what some are calling the Bush Bubble — that arguable gap between the president's re-elect numbers and his general approval rating on various issues." This bubble is why we should all be very afraid; if it doesn't burst in time, we're going to have four more years of Bush, and it's looking stronger and stronger as each new scandal or round of bad news comes and, inevitably, goes.
Number two in their list of bubble-factors: "2. A gradual, inarticulatable, unpollable sentiment among most Americans that enjoys the feeling of being at the top of the heap, disregards potshots, favors the exercise of unilateral power, distrusts entangling institutions, and isn't quite sure what the alternatives are. American exceptionalism is still a fundamental creed — and this President embodies it." What a great term, American exceptionalism. I've never heard it before but it's perfect for describing that feeling best summed up by one of my co-workers, while we were having a discussion about whether the role of American military power in world affairs has been for the better or worse: "C'mon, guys, we're America." |
