Pleonastic Ephemera

I used a program called Max/MSP in some of my CMC classes, and I always wished I had more time to experiment with it on my own instead of having to reserve studio time and trek to Prentis. Unfortunately, it costs $500. So I've been hoping to, uh, accidentally come across one of those, um, unlimited free trial versions you know is swimming around somewhere in the net.

Up until recently, Max was only available for Apple OSes. Being able to run it was certainly one of the things I was looking forward to with purchasing a PowerBook. Right around the time I was waiting for the updated 15" AlBooks to be released, Cycling 74 released a Windows version of Max. Two years I'd been waiting!

Since I've been fishing the net in search of economically-priced copies of Max, I've only been able to find versions for Mac OS 9 and Windows. Apparently the OS 9 version cannot be run in Classic mode in OS X machines (like mine). Damn.

I continue my search, but in the meantime I decided to install the Windows version.
Minimum system requirement: Pentium III 500 Mhz, 256 MB RAM, Windows XP.
My system: Pentium III 500 Mhz, 256 MB RAM, Windows 2000

I wondered if there were a such thing as an XP-only program, or if they weren't being overly cautious w/r/t the systems they comprehensively tested it on. Only one way to find out. Good news: it installed fine, and seems to work well. I'm having a great relearning my way around Max, and my old patches, which I optimistically burned to a CD back in May 2002, load properly. But some of the cool MSP objects I used to use, like fiddle~, aren't standard with MSP and are only available for download in Mac versions. So Max/MSP 4.2 for OS X has become my white whale!
