Senate Republicans have scheduled a 30 hour debate starting tonight to protest the holdup of four judicial nominations by Democratic filibuster threats. It's political theatre -- both sides know that nothing will happen vis a vis the nominees, everyone gets a chance to speak about whatever they think will score them some points in the media, and maybe a few people who live outside the Beltway will learn something about the process for appointing judges to lifelong positions on the U.S. Court of Appeals.
In other words, the Republicans are hosting a sleepover in the Capitol, complete with "blankets, pillows, [and] late-night snacks". That's cool, I had a great time going to those things as a kid. Instead of doing stupid stuff like decrying the opposition party's fiscal policy, we played Risk and sampled the strange late-night world of cable TV. I have this vision of Bill Frist and Tom Daschle splitting a package of Twinkies and giggling at whatever crap MSNBC runs at 3:30 in the morning. Then Chucky Schumer runs up and asks if they want to ding-dong-ditch the Rayburn Building. |
