I'm all into setting up services for my new place. ConEd has been called, electricity and gas are forthcoming. The local laundromatician knows I'm coming. And I've been all over DSL Reports trying to figure out the best, cheapest way to get my internet. I was considering Bway.net because the glowing testimonials of their satisfied customers stood out like a beacon compared to the dim reviews of the other services, but they only offer DSL, which means I have to get a phone line, and I don't want that.
NY Connect didn't look so bad, and it's a small ISP so I thought maybe their service would be comparable. I emailed them about 7:00 and got a response within 15 minutes -- awesome! But their cable service is "for a single PC," which means they bind the MAC address of your ethernet device to the cable modem so you can only use one computer to connect -- curses! But I figured their had to be a way around that, and so there is. Cablesense says that most routers can be set to use arbitrary MAC addresses, so you give the address of your computer to the company (or they record it when they set things up) and then you pull your router out of hiding and type in the address and now you can connect with whatever you want. At $44.95/month, I think this will be the company for me, unless I hear something specific and negative about them. From the National Weather Service's Severe Weather Alert for the New York area: IN ADDITION... A WIND CHILL WARNING HAS BEEN ISSUED FOR THURSDAY NIGHT AND FRIDAY MORNING. A COMBINATION OF VERY COLD TEMPERATURES ALONG WITH STRONG NORTHERLY WINDS WILL RESULT IN WIND CHILL TEMPERATURES FROM 20 TO 25 DEGREES BELOW ZERO LATE THURSDAY NIGHT AND FRIDAY MORNING. [sic] |
