Earthquake?!
I play squash twice a week with some friends of mine: Dov, Sukumar, Winston, sometimes Gilles. I'd say I'm the weakest player of the group. The biggest single flaw in my game is my serve return, it's just totally inconsistent, especially on the backhand side. Since we started playing regularly in September, I feel I've improved somewhat, but not as much as I'd like. Last week, everyone bailed except for Winston and me, so we had two intense sessions of one-on-one playing, each lasting about 90 minutes, enough time for seven to nine games. I think I made more progress during those games than during the previous three months. We just warmed up a bit and then played the hell out of each other, taking a water break every few games. Not having to switch courts and opponents or sit out a game (as happens when an odd number of players shows up) was refreshing. I really focussed on my game and on addressing specific weaknesses thereof. I came out of last week with an improved grip and consequently better deep forehand and backhand shots; an improved server return; and boosted confidence. Today Winston couldn't make it but Dov and Sukumar could, and I was looking forward to playing them. Aaaand the results were mixed: beat Sukumar once, lost three times, one of them a disaster. Lost all three to Dov but one was 10-9, and I put up a fight for the other two. But I have a good feeling about Thursday. Thursday I will step up and take my rightful place as a solid C-level squash player. For now, ibuprofren and Jameson's! |
